Description

Cholla wood is the naturally dried skeleton of a desert cactus, and it's one of the most functional botanicals you can add to an aquarium or bioactive enclosure. Its open, tubular structure develops biofilm rapidly, creates microfauna hotspots, provides shelter for small animals, and adds a striking naturalistic look to any aquascape. A staple of the botanical method aquarium and blackwater biotope setups.

Product Details

  • Common Name: Cholla wood, cholla cactus skeleton
  • Size: Approximately 6 inches long, ~1/2 inch in diameter (thin pieces)
  • 100% Natural: Naturally dried cactus skeleton, free from artificial chemicals — safe for aquariums, terrariums, and all animals listed below

Uses

  • Aquarium: Develops biofilm quickly that shrimp, plecos, and snails graze on, creating active microfauna hotspots. Provides shelter and a natural climbing surface. Lightweight and easy to position in any blackwater or biotope aquascape.
  • Isopod & Bioactive Enclosures: A staple in isopod bins — isopods and microfauna colonize cholla wood readily. We keep a piece in all of our isopod bins and bioactive enclosures.
  • Hermit Crabs: An excellent climbing log and chewing enrichment piece for hermit crab enclosures.
  • Reptiles & Amphibians: Provides hides and climbing surfaces for reptiles, millipedes, beetles, roaches, and arachnids.
  • Pet Birds: Safe for parrots and other birds to chew and climb on.
  • Air Plants & Crafts: A popular mount for air plants and a versatile element in wreaths and natural arrangements.

Aquarium Preparation

Rinse thoroughly, then boil for 15–20 minutes and soak overnight before adding to your aquarium. Cholla wood is lightweight and may float initially — use an aquarium-safe weight or rock to hold it down until it becomes waterlogged.

Please Note: As a natural product, each piece is unique and will vary in size, shape, and coloration. Intended for decorative, craft, and aquarium/vivarium use only. Not for human consumption.
