Description

Para Para pods are the large, flat, woody seed capsules of the Jacaranda copaia tree, a prominent species found in the moist forests of the Amazon. Their dramatic size and striking dark brown form make them one of the most eye-catching botanicals in the hobby — and their functional benefits for blackwater aquascapes, biotope setups, and dart frog vivariums are equally impressive. A statement piece for the botanical method aquarium.

Product Details

  • Scientific Name: Jacaranda copaia
  • Source Location: Brazil
  • Size: 4.5 to 7 inches long and 2.5 to 3.75 inches wide
  • 100% Natural: Organically sourced and naturally dried, free from artificial chemicals — safe and sustainable for all applications

Uses

  • Aquarium: When properly prepared, para para pods release a moderate amount of tannins, promote biofilm, and provide large, flat hiding spots that stimulate natural behaviors in fish and shrimp. Ideal for blackwater and biotope aquascaping. Note: these pods tend to float and require a longer soak to become fully waterlogged — an aquarium-safe weight can help.
  • Dart Frog Vivarium: Para para pods make a unique and eye-catching feeding station for dart frogs — a must-have for all dart frog vivariums. Their large flat surface is perfect for presenting fruit flies and other feeder insects.
  • Bioactive Terrarium: Provides hiding spots and a food source for isopods and springtails, enriches the substrate as they break down, and encourages foraging and exploration.
  • Botanical Home Decor: A dramatic standalone decorative piece, bowl filler, or natural arrangement accent.
  • Craft & Art Projects: Their large, flat form and woody texture inspire creative possibilities in wreaths, mixed media art, and botanical art.

Aquarium Preparation

  1. Boil: Boil for at least 1–2 hours to help them sink and leach initial tannins. These pods can be difficult to waterlog.
  2. Soak: Soak in clean water overnight or longer, changing water daily, until fully waterlogged. These pods may need to be weighed down, or simply let them float until they sink naturally.
  3. Ready to Use: Once they sink and you've achieved your desired water coloration, add to your setup.

Please Note: As a natural product, each para para pod will vary in size, shape, and color. Intended for decorative, craft, and aquarium/vivarium use only. Not for human consumption.

Three large Para Para Pods, used as aquarium botanicals and terrarium decor, rest on a white background. The left pod is shorter and rounder with dark spots; the right is longer and evenly colored. These produce tannins and biofilm in botanical method blackwater aquariums and they are isopod and springtail hotspots in bioactive terrariums.
