Description
Coco Curls — also called coconut husk curls — are sections of coconut husk from the Cocos nucifera (coconut palm) tree. Their fibrous texture makes them one a very functional botanical in the aquarium and bioactive enclosure hobbies, excelling as a biofilm producer, microfauna hotspot, moisture retainer, and foraging surface. A great addition to blackwater and biotope aquascapes on the botanical method. Springtails and isopods love to colonize the curls.
Product Details
- Scientific Name: Cocos nucifera
- Common Names: Coco curls, Coconut husk curls
- Source Location: India
- Size: Approximately 3 to 6 inches long and 0.35 inches wide
- 100% Natural: Organically sourced and naturally dried, free from artificial chemicals — safe and sustainable for all applications
Uses
- Aquarium: When properly prepared, coco curls release a high amount of tannins and they break down slowly during which time they develop a rich biofilm that shrimp and plecos graze on and create natural microfauna hotspots. Their fibrous texture holds biofilm exceptionally well — ideal for blackwater aquascaping.
- Springtail Culture: The fibrous texture retains moisture making coco curls an excellent addition to any springtail culture. Place a curl in your springtail culture. Within a few days the springtails will swarm the curl and the curl can be picked up to harvest springtails from the springtail culture.
- Bioactive Terrarium: Provides hiding spots and a food source for isopods and springtails, retains humidity, and enriches the substrate as it breaks down.
-
Bird Enrichment: An excellent natural bird toy for foraging and shredding fun.
- Botanical Home Decor: Their natural, sculptural form works beautifully as standalone decorative pieces, bowl fillers, or in natural arrangements and potpourri.
- Craft & Art Projects: Their unique shape and fibrous texture inspire creative possibilities in wreaths, fairy gardens, and mixed media art.
Aquarium Preparation
- Boil: Boil for at least 15 minutes to help them sink and leach initial tannins.
- Soak: Soak in clean water overnight or longer, changing water daily, until fully waterlogged and desired tannin level is reached.
- Ready to Use: Once they sink and you've achieved your desired water coloration, add to your tank.
Please Note: As a natural product, each coco flower will vary in size, shape, and color. Intended for decorative, craft, and aquarium/vivarium use only. Not for human consumption.
