Description
Indian almond leaves — also called Catappa or Ketapang leaves — are the naturally dried leaves of the Terminalia catappa tree. They are one of the most widely used botanicals in the freshwater hobby, beloved for their ability to create authentic blackwater conditions and their broad benefits for fish, shrimp, amphibians, and reptiles.
A cornerstone of the botanical method aquarium, catappa leaves are essential for anyone building a blackwater or biotope aquascape. They release tannins that aid in water softening and pH control, creating the soft, acidic conditions that wild bettas and other tannin-loving species thrive in. Their surface quickly develops biofilm — a natural food source for shrimp, fry, and microfauna — and their well-documented antimicrobial properties make them a trusted tool for reducing stress and supporting fish health.
Catappa leaves are a staple for betta fish care, shrimp tanks, dwarf cichlid biotopes, and dart frog vivariums. They are also used to make tadpole tea for tadpole rearing. Add 1–2 leaves per 10 gallons and replace every 2–4 weeks as they break down.
