Betel nut husks or betel nut pods are the outer layer of the fruit of the Areca catechu palm. The husks are very fibrous and durable, and they can last months in an aquarium or bioactive enclosure. They are primarily found across tropical Asia. Betel nut pods are eco friendly and great addition to natural bioactive enclosures and blackwater and biotope aquascapes on the botanical method. Fish, shrimp, and snails benefit from betel nut husks. These are also a great addition to isopod bins, springtail cultures, and reptile habitats. Microfauna such as isopods and springtails enjoy colonizing these fibrous botanicals.

Aquarium Preparation

Boil: Boil for at least 15 minutes to help them sink and leach initial tannins.

Soak: Soak in clean water overnight or longer, changing water daily, until fully waterlogged and desired tannin level is reached.
